15th of july: Liberation Day

bob leterme

Good News! Yves Leterme resigns as PM. Let’s hope it is final and the King has a lucid moment and agrees with this resignation. This particular resignation once more proves the staggering genius of Yves Leterme. We remember many glorious moments: the incredible alliance with N-VA in order to get enough votes without taking in mind that he would actually have to do what Ward De Bever told him, the bending over to the Dutch when they started nagging about the ‘wegenvignet’, the blood chilling performance of the Brabançonne, the longest government formation ever; and now this, just like Justine Henin, quitting at the top of his career! This deserves a place on the Pukkelpop Stage!

Good News! Bob Mould will not come to the Pukkelpop Festival in Kiewit. He has officially announced this. Well, what a happy coincidence. This situation should offer a great opportunity to Yves Leterme to start a new career: corporate business instigated alternative rock star. Maybe he can become friends with Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield and start a Nu-Black-Metal band called “Leterminal”, bringing you a repertoire of Flemish Folk Traditionals in a style that is tough enough to scare the Walloons into a willingness to separate this country.

Join us with the darkside

The first weekend of July is a tradition for de portables. Every year we played at Farmfest in the metropolis of Aalbeke. Not this year. Although we offered them to play for free beer, the organization thought that the cost (3405 jupilers, 377 orvals and 399 westvleterens) couldn’t be justified. Nevertheless we will be prezent.  We will have a BLAST at what it without a doubt the best music festival ever. We kid you not. Farmfest feels like you come at home. Everyone is friendly, there’ve got record stalls, there’s homemade ricard and ice-creams and of course there’s plenty of good bands playing. It breaths coziness and in this age of instant gratification and commercial overload it reminds us why we became a punk in the first place: to get drunk on the cheap. So see you today and tomorrow in Aalbeke and we buy you a beer (we do expect a beer in return, we’re not Poverello)

New portables EP

It’s been all quiet on the portables front. We’ve been fully occupied with the following things (in no particular order):

  1. Packing in stuff and moving to a new home. We found a great new rehearsal space that will enable us to record our heavy psych dub jams and release them the day after on the net. *Cheer*
  2. We’ve been at an oxygen training week in the Swiss alps to prepare ourselves for some heavy beer lifting weekends. There’s farmfest, My Bloody Valentine and the infamous Gents Feesten all coming up.  *Cheer*x2
  3. We’ve recorded a fresh sounding EP,  called Vegetarian BBQ. It features 8 songs, covers and remixes and funny stuff. 5 Euro’s for 45 minutes of portables goodness. The EP wasn’t a heavy bevalling. The making of he cover however was, hence the set of alt cover art on flickr *Cheers*x3
  4. We’ve been finetuning our soccer skills because we think that even de portables can beat the dutch soccer team at the world championship in 2010! *Cheers*x3400002xPi

Dead Birds, Live Birds, Extinct Birds

Last friday de portables played a pretty good live show for a small audience in Belgium’s finest independent club 4AD in Diksmuide. We shared the bill with ‘the dodos’, an excellent little band from San Francisco. We’re very jealous of their garbage can and we were very impressed by the guy who played that particular object.

The entire portables show can be downloaded right here, right now; especially for those of you who missed and that were quite a lot of people actually! And we could have used your support for the afterwardly World Championship of World Soccer we played against those silly birds from Frisco!
